Ape Music - Breakbeat Record Label

Ape Music was established in 2006, by Ben & Lex, from the ashes of the successful south west club night of the same name. After nearly ten years as residents at 'Beatz & Bobz' (one of the country's longest running breaks nights) and at 'Ape' and having had many releases on other labels such as Functional, Silo, Drum & Breaks and Wut Eva to name a few. Ben & Lex are no strangers to what makes a good tune so they decided it was time for them to get out there and start their own label.

Lee Potter, aka Cut La Roc, made his name in the hurly-burly big beat days of the late 90s. Signed to Skint Records, the same label as Norman ‘Fatboy’ Cook, he was responsible for pioneering the big beat sound worldwide alongside Midfield General, Bentley Rhythm Ace and Fatboy Slim himself.

Cut La Roc held a four-year residency at the Big Beat Boutique in his hometown of Brighton. He’s DJ’d all around the world several times, appeared on Top Of The Pops, set a new Guinness world record for DJing with the most decks at once (nine!), and has recorded with vocalists such as Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody.

Now he’s about to release his third artist album – ‘Larger Than Life’. Bookending another chapter in the La Roc story, it’s a magical blend of soul, funk, hip-hop, deep house, lilting electronica and breakbeat. Drawing on all his influences, it’s a masterful piece of work: assured, confident, and pushing at boundaries like somebody at the top of his game should still continue to do.

It all started for Cut La Roc when he got into hip-hop in his mid-teens. He practised scratch techniques for hours, becoming an expert battle champ, and when acid house hit in the late 80s he was exhilarated by its energy. He began to DJ in clubs, using his scratch skills to stand out from other DJs, and by the mid-90s had fallen in with the Skint Records crew.

Big beat, the sound that coalesced around Fatboy Slim and the Skint brigade, was a perfect genre for Lee. Mashing together block-rockin’ beats, amyl house, sample culture, breakbeat and drum & bass, this was an exciting time for electronic music. Big beat is credited with converting a slew of indie-rock fans to the wonders of dance music, and its mix ‘n’ match ethos suited Lee down to the ground.

As well as being resident at the Big Beach Boutique for four years, Lee DJ’d all over America, Australia, Europe and the Far East. He put out first the ‘Mad Skills EP’ on Skint, swiftly followed by the ‘Freeze’, ‘Making It Hot’ and ‘Fallen’ singles. He was invited to mix an ‘FSUK’ comp for Ministry Of Sound before releasing his debut album on Skint – ‘La Roc Rocs’ – in the year 2000.

Assorted tracks and remixes of his were signed to tons of compilations, and after he moved to Colchester and saw that the music industry was rapidly changing he set up his own label – Rocstar Recordings.

Rocstar released Lee’s ‘Many Styles EP’ and music by beatfreak luminaries such as Chad Jackson and DJ Whack before putting out Lee’s second artist album in 2007 – ‘Nemesis’.

Now, as the release of ‘Larger Than Life’ looms, he’s accumulated a tidy roster of artists on Rocstar – Parker, Funkanomics, Pixel Fist, 601, Ben & Lex etc – and also started the Rocstar DJ agency to service the dance scene with DJ bookings.

‘Larger Than Life’ sees Lee collaborating with a wide variety of vocalists. Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol appears on ‘Mishka’, a soaring love song that really shows off the tenderness of the singer-songwriter’s voice.
‘What Love Is’ kicks off the album’s proceedings with a great blaxploitation funk bassline before it unfolds into a tasty slice of hip-hop love. ‘Ride On’ is an futurist electro paean, while ‘Come Get Some’ – featuring Donald D – is a grimey vocal breakbeat number.

‘Hey Girl’ featuring Lion D is a heavy technoid ragga track that could fit into UK funky/bashment scenes as much as detonate breaks steppa floors. ‘Jump Up & Down’ is an electroid jump-up hip-hop joint, then ‘Don’t Stop’ could almost be the Stones.

‘Deathstar’ and ‘Glitter’, both featuring a vampish Fangs, are slices of punky electroclash filth, while ‘Waited Far Too Long’ almost borrows the riff from ‘Dear Prudence’ by The Beatles before unfolding into a lo-slung funky trip-hop jam, Alex Larke’s indie vocal lifting it into MTV territory.

It’s Cut La Roc’s best album yet, the one he’s most proud of, and ably demonstrates that he’s a veritable master in the studio, as well as on the decks.

Schema consist of Mark Smith, Lee Davis, Sean Lamy and Lee Dorrington. The foursome are based in Jersey, Channel Islands.

Schema consist of Mark Smith, Lee Davis, Sean Lamy and Lee Dorrington. The foursome are based in Jersey, Channel Islands. Since their formation, based on a burning desire to produce and play their own take of a Breakbeat, Dubstep and Drum & Bass infusion, they have recieved support from some of the biggest names in the scene.

2009 saw the guys introduced with a live appearance and guest mix on Jay Cunning’s Breakbeat Sessions show on Kiss FM. This was followed later in the summer with a monstrous D.J slot on the Breaksday stage at Glade Festival, which went down as one of the highlights of the Nu Breed hosted Sunday. Schema’s first single, a double A side dubstep project entitled ‘Chutney Grip’ was released in autumn on 720 Bass’s Wicky Lindows label, found airtime on Radio 1 and has earned itself a re-release as a vocal version and remix package.

As well as remixing Cut La Roc’s ‘Looking For The Deep Bass’ for Ben & Lex’s APE records, 2010 has already seen the lads join forces in the studio with two of the scene’s heavyweight names for collaboration projects, in the form of Pyramid and Afghan Headspin.

Jay Cunning himself has signed Schema to Sub Slayers, and their first outing on the label is a remix of Gella’s ‘Twinkle’ featuring $pyda, on the B side of the original, which has been hailed single of the month in DJ Mag, International DJ, and Titillate’s March editions. In addition to this fantastic opening chapter in the Schema story, Sub Slayers will be releasing Schema’s much anticipated four track E.P – ‘A Day Of Small Victories’, due out in late Spring.

They hold residency at the huge ‘Theology’ club night and with the D.J bookings at highly regarded U.K events such as Beats & Bob’s, Fracture Clinic, and BREAK!, starting to fill an ever increasing workload in the diary, coupled with running their own nights and events at home these lads constantly have their finger on the pulse of the scene and without doubt are only on their way up through the ranks.

Release date March 29th

Press Release

After topping the Beatport charts with the last release, ‘Back to the Old Jack’ Ape Music are back and this time we bring you the dance music legend that is… Cut La Roc!!

And with him he has brought a monster of a tune tune that is most definitely ‘Looking for the Deep Bass’ !

Hot of the heels of his recent LP and huge collaborations with the likes of Afghan Headspin, LFDB is a bad boy electro (real electro!) tinged reese basslined beast of a tune!!

Yet again for the remixes, we have gone above and beyond and brought you 3 of the scenes brightest.

First up we have the Bristolian bad boys of beats & bass, The Beatmonkeys. Soon to drop their debut LP on Rocstar (Cut La Roc’s imprint, it’s all very incestuous down this way) The ‘Monkeys have given us a taster of what’s to come with sweet rolling live drums, mean old bass and a lush piano break in the middle that wouldn’t sound at all out of place as the last tune on a Chemical Brothers album!!

Next up we have the Sub Slaying Jersey kru the Schema boys giving us a taste of what they do best, a bass heavy behemoth of a tune that straddles the border of breaks & dubstep perfectly fitting in box of either type of set… HEAVY TINGS!!!

Taking us even further in our journey to find the DEEP BASS is the rudest of all the Devon rude bwoys… the man dem call Dutty Dan!!! Twisted shuffly dubstep beats and stoooopid bass that will chew you up & spit you right back out, finishes off the mission Mr La Roc gave us and as you can hear we truly have enjoyed the journey of ‘Looking For The Deep Bass’, and i don’t mean an existential fish!!!

Keep it locked to Ape for the next installment of bass driven pleasure coming soon.

Jinx was formed in 1999. Having cut his teeth DJing around the massive Northern free party scene, and influenced by the upcoming Breakstep garage sound of the time, two friends from Lancaster, UK got together to form a new production duo. Basing their sound on a shared love of Dub, Jungle, Techno and Breaks, they released first single Kutt Free to a warm reception from critics and DJs alike, and capitalised on this success with second release Kreamy Belta -a tune that featured in the sets of some of the scenes biggest DJs for over a year. Shortly after this release, however, the partnership disbanded when one member went on to form acclaimed Tech House duo Spincycle. This wasn’t the end, though. An unquenchable thirst for breakbeat and a small change of personnel meant that Jinx reformed in early 2005 with sights clearly set on making floor shaking records that would rock the foundations of the UK breaks scene.

After an extended period in production limbo, the Jinx boys new, techier, funked-up sound led to their first two tunes being snapped up by Koma & Bones for their Burrito imprint. Following that, smashing dancefloors around the UK and abroad at the end of 2006 was massive track ‘The Raid’, and still forthcoming in 2008 is Some class people & Twilight 2000 on U.S label Hi-Grade and Dreadrock & Acid Shuffle on Bassrock Records.

Dom Almond has been involved in dance music since the early Nineties when he was inspired by the scratch DJ’s and turntablists of the Hip Hop scene and the dirty groove of Electro, it wasn’t long before he wanted a piece of the action. Dom dedicated years to developing his art and has amounted a mass of technical skills. Renown for his mixing trickery Dom is more than adept at cutting things up, adding his own style to a set.

Dom got into the Old Skool scene playing at the legendary Sanctury and for the 4th dimension crew in Oxford.

As his reputation grew Dom further developed his mixing skills, resulting in him coming runner up in the Muzik magazine bedroom bedlam competition in 1999, only beaten to the post by the then unknown Yousef.

As his DJ skills developed it was only a matter of time before he turned his hand to producing and became a name in the hard house scene of the late 90’s. His first release came courtesy of Elasticman records under the name Dom Demure, and he was a favorite among hard house DJs like Lisa Lashes and illogic (who also provided remixes of Dom’s track “Keep The Rhythm Rocking”)

As his music taste developed and the hard house scene became commercial Dom turned back to his Hip Hop and Electro roots, elements of which were beginning to be served up together with the beginnings of the breakbeat scene. Dom began carving up fat breaks with grimy electro and funk driven house. He met Jonny Sessions, and became one of the first residents of what is now one of the major names in the breaks scene.

His 4 year residency with Sessions has seen him play alongside the cream of international artists, including the Audio Bully’s, Plump DJ’s, Stanton Warriors, Seb Fontaine, Eric Prydz, Tim Deluxe, Mutiny, Wayout West, Evil 9, Annie Mac, Adam Freeland, Freestylers, Pendulum, Seb Fontaine, Circulation Savers, MYNC Project, Switch, Futureshock, Steve Angelo and Nic Warren. Having to warm up for, or indeed in many cases follow, a whose who of dance over the years and ensured that Dom has firmly left his mark, and the mark is starting to grow.

Dom now has an array of experience behind him and his most recent productions have been making some waves, recent release on Erase Records “Shake It” reached number 4 in the Dj download breaks chart and recieved 4 and 1/2 out of five in djmag. With signings to Erase records, Voodoo Vinyl, Big Licks Digital and remixing for labels such as Rexhouse Records and Systematica Records Dom continues to carve out a name for himself. Doms remix of Mark Sun’s “Dawnlight” on Jack Digitals won him a much coveted set at The Gallery, Turnmills.

With his DJ diary getting fuller by the day and new residency at Beatcheck in Milton Keynes with names such as Soul of Man, A Skillz, FreeStylers, Drumattic Twins, Ali b, Stanton Warriors, Slyde and not forgetting breaks poll winners Groove Diggerz headlining it seems it won’t be long before his name is one that goes hand in hand with quality underground dance at its best.

If that’s not enough to keep him busy Dom is also a member of A Dominant Species with Anya and Special A, with support and radio play coming from both Jay Cunning (Kiss FM) and DJ Icey. They have a releases on L3 Records and Brains Kans Recordings and forthcoming releases on Mechanoise Records and Streetwise records.
